'Truly Tiny' is showing off
« on: September 02, 2009, 05:26:17 PM »
A few days ago I noticed 'Truly Tiny' was beginning to bloom and posted this picture on another thread:

I thought I might chart the progress here.  From this evening:

It sort of reminds me of the plant from The Little Shop of Horrors.   "Feed Me;D  If I don't ever post again please contact CSI PVU (Plant Victim Unit).

Wow! Truly Tiny really is tiny, I've never seen one that small.   and, you are right, it does look a bit like it came from the Little Shop of Horrors.   Good luck, let us know if you get to eat it or it eats you.

Kay,
I'm not certain but from my observations a 'stalk' will stop growing after it flowers and the plant seems to devote its energy to off-shoots or pups.  I'm sure there are folks here who could provide well-informed answer.  Ornamental bananas do produce fruit but it is insignificant.  I think that is what earns them the 'ornamental' classification.  I have one banana called Musa ornata 'Bronze'.  It gets beautiful flower spikes and little bitty bananas; about the size of my little toe.

With most bananas, I'm not sure about the ornamental ones, once they bloom and produce fruit that stalk dies but there should be several pups already growing to take its place.

I was at a friends house the other day and they have a beautiful banana which is only medium height but has enormous leaves and red, edible fruit.  They cut off the blooms as soon as they appear because they want to keep the stalk alive as long as possible.  Thus, they have about 4 stalks that are at least a foot in diameter, very broad stalks.   They don't want the fruit and they cut off the pups as well. Happily they have offered some to me once I have a spot for them.  I love the leaves, they are at least 3' wide and the whole stalk is only about 10' tall.  Really beautiful and tropical.

Thanks Sonny, Jonna,
I wondered because I have a small Musa Siam Ruby. It's beautiful and it will come inside this winter. From what I can find it does fruit.
The information is appreciated.
I hope you find room for those pups Jonna. They will be lovely.  :) How are the plecos? Growing? My plecos look like they are breeding and since they are bristlenose longfins they will find homes easily.
Sonny, I really love the positioning of your banana by that lovely birdbath. Everything is so green and lush. It's a joy to see your gardens and fish.  o(
Do you have any Tosakins? Mine stayed in the house this summer since I've been sick but next summer they will go back out on the deck. They loved their first year out there.
