Catfish!
« on: June 02, 2009, 06:26:56 AM »
Do any of you fine folks keep fish other than goldies or koi?  Although my pond is too small now, I am thinking of getting a few native catfish when we have a bigger pond.  They just look like fun.
My pond is a turtle pond!

2006: ~135 gallons of water in a 150 gallon stock tank.
2012: ~250 gallons in a 330 gallon stock tank
2013: ~40 gallon in-ground wading pool for my box turtle

One RES, and a passel of gambusias.

I don't but there are a few here who do raise catfish.  They'll chime in soon.

Its amazing just how aggressive catfish can be. Most people picture them as slow bottom feeders but they are a very active hunter and I've had them hit a fast moving lure. A friend of mine had an aqairium and he put a small perch and a small catfish in it. The catfish ate the perch even though it was almost the same size as him.

I had two in one of my ponds for 10 years and they did fine....the only thing you should know is that they will eat anything big enough to fit into their mouths so will most likely eat most of your babies...IMO they are really neat pond mates....I did have an albino cat but, re-homed him this year to a friend with a larger pond.....so he had more room to grow...he was about 20" when I re-homed him...and my friend instantly fell in love with him...infact the whole family just adores Al....

I'm always teasing DS about putting a perch in my lily tank to clean up the unwanted fry.  Maybe I need a catfish instead.  Is there any kind of birth control for goldies?

Sue, mosquito fish are good BC for goldies... they eat the eggs as soon as they are laid. But I hear that goldies themselves will eat eggs too.

I have a 1,000 gal pond with koi(3) and goldfish. Every spring I put in the pond my plecostomus cat which winters inside. It loves the pond, and grows amazingly during the spring and summer. When I do my fall cleanup I net it and bring it back in, usually at twice the size it started with!

I have a 365 gallon inground pond in my back yard with seven 5" to 9" chubunkins, and one 8" sarasa (comet). The other residents are mosquito fish, native cascadia frogs, and trap door snails. So far for the size of my pond seems to have a good balance in it's own ecosystem along with an adequate filtration system that is for the most part out of view.
