Stabilzing Pond Edge Rocks
« on: April 14, 2008, 02:02:28 PM »
Pond season is almost here in sunny Manitoba, Canada! There's actually water floating on the ice today as opposed to the 2 feet of snow which we had a mere week ago.  @O@ So pond cleaning is only a few weeks away.

My question ...I've used some waterfall foam to stabilize rocks at the pond edge, attempting to adhere them to the liner as I've had a number topple in when doing pond maintenance. It was more or less successful but I found the foam didn't adhere particularily well to many off the stones. I don't know if this was a surface preparation issue or just the way it is with foam. It seems that the foam is an ideal adhesive to everything else that you don't want it to stick to - like having a wayward clump of foam sneak around behind you and stick to the back of your hairy leg  :(.

I will have the pond emptied for cleaning (fish are indoors for the winter) so will have the opportunity and time to try something different. Any ideas?

The expanding foam worked well for me on my EPDM liner, even ten years later the rocks are still holding.  I used it on primarily granite stones and one slab of what I think was quartzite.  I notice they now have different grades of expanding foam.  Are you sure you got the really nasty super-messy & sticky stuff?

It was really messy, sticky stuff ....I can't recall the specific brand but it was a dark grey "waterfall" foam. It stuck just fine to everything it wasn't supposed to. The liner was brand new and I took a degree of care to wipe it down because it had a fine powder on it. The rocks were large "river wash" variety, so probably limestone with only a few being granite. I don't know if different types of stone would make much difference. A few of the stones lifted right off the foam with little adhesion evident. I'll give it a try again once I get things cleaned up a bit and maybe take a little more care to keep all surfaces clean, maybe give the stones a good work over with a steel brush.

We've had exceptionally warm, way above "normal"  temperatures for the past several days and today is forecast to be around 68F. Lots of water above the ice now. I may actually be able to drain & start cleanup in a few days if the weather holds. :)

Well I got the spring yard & pond cleanup done in absolutely balmy (around 70F!) temperatures last weekend. Mind you we had a winter storm yesterday and 28F temps which dumped a few inches of wet snow, rain, sleet, etc. which kind of put a temporary damper on "spring" but things are looking for back to normal (around 50F) temperatures next week with plenty of sunshine. Until then the GF's will have to wait patiently in the basement winter tank.

But back to the real reason for this. The waterfall foam that I used last year for stabilizing pond edge rocks and which resulted in hit and miss adhesion to various rocks last year was replaced by general low expansion "door & window" household insulating foam spray. Wow, what a difference! Not only did it stick to everything but set up faster & harder helping to position things in place. Perhaps it's the low expansion that results in the better performance (ie cures in place in a relatively short time rather than continually expanding for up to an hour or more after application). At any rate I'm a happier camper now and hopefully won't be having any more inadvertent landslides into the pond this year.

Now if the weather would just warm up so I can get the little beasties into their summer home.

Which door and window insulating foam spray did you use?   I am in the process of doing the same thing and had planned on using Great Stuff.  Since you had such great results, I would like to know what you used.

Great Stuff was the "stuff" that I used. Make sure that it is the minimal expansion "window & door" variety ....the large gap filler expands too much which seems to lessen it's adhesive qualities and makes it more difficult to hold everything in place while it cures. I've seen rocks of several pounds weight lifted by the foam as it expands (not to mention that door that was precision shimmed only to jam tight after foaming with gap filler). I've heard of people painting the foam to blend more naturally but I found that in a few weeks the colour browns in the UV sunlight and the stuff under water grows a cover of algae.
