How to repair tear in epdm liner?

I have just experienced my first leak ever.  It was caused by a sharp rock and I'm not sure how to fix it.  I don't have fish right now, but may later on.  It's probably 3 inches long and looks like snagged fabric.  It is located at the top of the pond's water level...which is good I suppose.  TIA!

I would just use the Seaming 2 sided tape we use for joining two liners together and make a patch.  (The stuff is not cheap)
Not having that available to me I would get an inner tube patch kit, follow the directions for it's use and if the patch material was not large enough to cover the tear, I would find a place where I could steal a piece of linter big enough to work as a patch... and just for safety sake I would patch both sides if possible.

When patching or seaming the tape should be larger than the patch, or stick out past the edge of the liners your joining together..

I just had to fix one myself. I make sure to keep Seaming Tape on hand.

Carvers suggestion in using an inner tube patch kit is a good one that I have used in the past for small punctures.  The tear described as 3 inches might be problematical with a tube repair kit unless you could find a really large one. 

One other procedure I have used with mixed success is dependant on never throwing away excess liner and obtaining some Camel Universal cement Type C.  You can cut a piece of spare liner large enough to cover the tear, clean and dry the liner with the tear on the outside and swab with acetone.  Also swab the patch piece with acetone to clean it.  Then using the Camel cement. Coat both the liner and patch thoorughly and allow to dry.  Next is the hardest part:  Spread a small amount of cement over the patch and apply to the tear area and clamp the entire patch with woodworking clamps with pieces of plywood both inside and out that cover the entire patch area.  Of course this is only possible close to the liner edge because the liner above the tear will have to be bunched up in the clamp.  Allow to cure at least overnight before refilling the liner.

I am not a fan of the seaming tape at all because it is a very soft rubber that will not resist many kinds of roots that can find their way through it.  I have used seaming tape at least a dozen times, both inside and outside a joint and nearly every one failed because of root puncture within 6 years.  In some cases the roots merely worked their way between the EDPM and the tape.  Just my experience, yours may be better.

I still recommend the Firestone patch kit.  Easier and better long term results.  Remember, my advice is worth only what you paid for it.....
