goldfish with an open sore on top of his head
« on: May 20, 2010, 02:35:34 PM »
One of my goldfish has an open sore on top of his head. I noticed it last winter when they were in the 100 gal stock tank. They are all outside now in the pond. It isn't getting any bigger or smaller. It's just there. It kind of looks like there is a small chunk of flesh missing. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, but sure bothers me. If a picture would help, I'll try to get one this weekend.
Any reasonable suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Steve

Are you sure its a hole? Sometimes they will have a dot of skin that has no pigment, and you can see the color of the bone beneath...

If it is a hole, all suggestions start with catch it.
Then you can swab it with a variety of disinfectants - be careful not to get it in the eyes of the fish or on the gills. Almost anything that works on people will work on a fish. Iodine, merthiolate. Gel based antibiotics are not so good - they wash off.

The minute or so that you have the fish out of the water will not bother it.

Blow on the med to dry it a little.

Look carefully for algal growth. As the water warms this spring/summer you can expect opportunistic secondary infections like algae - which is an indication of necrosis.
