saving goldfish with dropsy
« on: July 31, 2010, 05:31:08 PM »
I noticed one of my goldies was getting swollen the other day, so I hurried and netted him (which was really easy surprisingly) and brought him in the house aquarium (I took the goldies that were in there and put them in the pond).  I added some epsom salt and have been feeding him spinach.  He's not swollen anymore and his fins are almost completely flat! I'm so excited! I thought for sure he was going to die! He's swimming just fine and doesn't "act" like anything is wrong - I hope it stays on this path!  o(

I've done this a few times with a few fishies and with all the medicines and patience I put into saving the fish I think it would have been better if I let it go in the beginning.  My patients have survived only to have multiple relapses and then death.  Never had a survivor.  Hope you fare better.

He had completely "deflated" and now he's all puffed up again.  I don't think he's gonna make it. He's acting fine, but just big.  Luckily, he was my least favorite goldfish, but it makes me sad to lose any of them!

Sorry to hear that Holldoll.  I've been through that a few times with each fish that had dropsy.  Each time it got better I would say we did it and then see the poor thing turn into a pine cone again.  So sad.

I'm sorry to hear about your fish.  Dropsy is one of the worst things for a fish to have and sadly there is no chance of a recovery unless it's caught in the very early stages.  Thankfully it is not contagious so your other fish should be okay.
