ground cover suggestions for rose bed

At work we have a very informal rose garden about 30' long and 8' wide.  It was just planted last fall and mulched with wood chips.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a perennial ground cover that would look nice under the roses?  Most of the roses are rugosa types and there are a few potentilla shrubs mixed in as well. 

My preference would be something that I can start from seed, I'm putting in a big seed order this week, will be seeding toward the end of January.  I thought about some of the creeping thymes, they do well here.  Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Kay, those are some good suggestions.  I don't recall seeing a seed source for ajuga but I will do a search.  Unfortunately neither rosemary nor dichondra are hardy for us here but dichondra especially is very attractive.  Not sure if I've seen lamium seed either but it's worth looking for.  Thanks again for your help.  emm

Lysimachi nummularia would be nice.
And you may not be able to find seed,
but a few plants would quickly cover the area.
You could also use Ophiopogon and/or Liriope Grasses (actually in the lily family).

And don't forget, the best groundcover around the sunny edges, would be miniature roses.

Thanks Joyce for the good ideas.  There really are no end of choices.  I have plenty of creeping jenny here at home, would be a simple task to root some.  You're right, they would fill in in no time.  I have a nice little pot of black mondo surrounded by babies tears in my living room.  Very expensive here and according to the plant tag, just outside its hardiness zone.  Next year I plan to split it and see if it will overwinter outdoors.  I would love to be able to have some beside the pond...
