Evaporation?
« on: July 14, 2011, 04:04:06 PM »
So, falls are running now, can't see any leaks. BUT, got up this morning and the water level was down about 2 inches. Is it possible to have that much evaporation overnight? Topped off this morning and now this evening we are down about an inch and a half. You can feel some mist coming off the falls and some splashing, didn't think it would account for 2 inches of water loss in a pond about 5,000 gallons. There are a lot of pieces of slate that the water is running over. The total length of the falls is probably about 6 feet.

My pond drops seemingly every day.  Surface area, falls, plants, plus a little splashing all help evaporation.

But I think 2" is excessive, even in hot dry windy weather.

Yes, that sounds like a significant leak IMO. Refill tomorrow then turn off your falls/skimmer overnight. If the water doesn't go down that will be good news because you'll know the problem will be around the falls or the skimmer. The bad news is if the water level drops with the falls shut off -- you'll have to find the leak in the liner.

An easy way to tell if it's evaporation or leak: put a bucket in the water with the top a couple inches from the water level so pond water cannot flow in. Add pond water to the bucket until it is at the identical level as the pond's water surface. If the water level in pond and bucket are always the same, it's evaporation. If the pond water level drops below that in the bucket, it's a leak.

Good luck!

Check other things, too.

I just discovered this morning an odd leak... water from a small gurgling rock fountain was running back down the rubber tubing and dripping slowly onto the ground.  Over time, that steady drip would bring down the level of the pond, to be sure.

Yep, it's a leak  >:( I am not happy about it! I am having so many problems with this pond. GRRRRRRR.
It seems it must be under the waterfall somewhere. I dont' know what the heck I'm going to do about it. I certainly can't tear the whole thing apart.

How much does the water drop when the falls are shut off compared to when it is running?

Unfortunately, that may be your only option.

Is the waterfall source a reservoir or biofalls module?

SEVEN leaks!!! 2 of them big enough for Matt to put his thumb through. Guess I didn't do such a hot job moving those rocks into the falls. At least they seem to be confined to the bottom layer. Patched and water level held overnight. Will be putting more layers of liner under those rocks when they go back in this time!

What type and thickness liner did you use? It is highly unusual for the standard 45 mil EPDM to puncture or tear except under heavy load or stress.

I know, I'm surprised too! It is 45 mil EDPM, got it from Just liners. There were some very sharp edges on some of the pieces of slate, and I think Doug (14) slid instead of lifted some of them. He's trying hard, can't get on his back. We are leaving it for a few days until the temps come down. Then we will be putting several extra pieces of liner on before the stone.

Underlayment would actually be a better choice if you have some scrap pieces.

I can do that as well. WE actually used tyvek as underlayment since we were on solid clay.

I was referring to the 6 oz. non-woven geotextile that is normally used. It is extremely tough. I have no knowledge of or experience with Tyvek used as an underlayment and could find no reference to puncture resistance on DuPont's Tyvek web site. Stick with the scrap liner for extra protection.

I stood in home dept trying to poke my key through the Tyvek. It was VERY strong. Since we found no rocks or sticks in the dig, just solid clay, we figured it would work well (and it was much less $). Everything I have done, has had to be very little or no cost.  Ah, if only funds were unlimited........

it's looking up, the water level has held for 3 nights now! @O@ We are waiting for a cooler day to replace the bottom layer of slate.
