Prayers please
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:50:48 PM »
My FIL had surgery last Friday for an aneurysm behind his knee. Fortunately his GP discovered this during a regular check-up and had a cat scan done, if he had not detected it he may not have still been alive now, he's 80. Turned out there's a vein below your knee which branches off in to 3 veins, 2 of those were totally blocked and the 3rd one was getting there. He came though surgery fine but last night he started running a fever of 100.6 and his ankle started to swell. His leg is one huge bruise. They planned to take a vein from the knee area to bypass the bad area but couldn't find a good enough one. So they took one from his thigh. So he has staples from his mid thigh to his knee then the entire length of his knee in 2 spots and another farther down his leg where the blockage was. Please pray for the fever to subside and for him to listen to the dr. when he says 'wait for 2 weeks before doing anything except walking'. We only live 1 mile from him and I'm a stay at home mom so I am able to go over pretty much any time he needs help but he's bound and determined that he's able to do much more than the dr. says, including trying to drive this weekend. YIKES!!!!!
Thanks....Cath

Cath, good thing you are so close!
You have my prayers too.
Try real hard to keep him from overdoing it. {-)

Remember I had a BAD episode of internal bleeding 2 weeks after my lumpectomy.
The hematoma is still there, slowly reabsorbing. Doctor said could take up to a year.
But for weeks after the initial internal bleeding,
I had several more 'bleeds' anytime I did something, even lift a gallon of milk out of the frig.
They almost had to perform more surgery to repair it cuz it wasn't healing.
So the moral of the story: Don't overdo it.
I didn't think I was overdoing it, (was folding laundry) but something I did must have caused it.
So then I was bound up with a HUGE ace bandage and had to sit around and do NOTHING until it healed.
Took almost 2 months.

Your FIL doesn't wanna do what I did. Maybe he'll listen to my story.
The first month after surgery, he REALLY has to take it easy. (8:-)

Peace to all  ... Joyce

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your FIL. I can understand his feelings. I know that I would have a hard time taking it easy, even though I know better. Just goes against my grain.
Nice for him that you are close by to help out though.

You all are in my thoughts and prayers.  Tell him to listen to Joyce  {-) There's a reason they tell ya not to do anything, which is also the HARDEST thing they could tell ya.. :(

Thanks everyone for your prayers and concern. His swelling and fever have gone down so those prayers have been answered but he's still determined that he should be able to drive a short distance before he's actually released to do so. I told my husband he should go take his car keys so that wouldn't be an option. If this were my dad rather than FIL I would do that. He has a follow up appointment this coming Wed. If I can keep him from driving until I can take him to that we'll be setting fine. Since we live so close I have been able to be around often to care for things for him which has helped so far.
I appreciate all of you. I always know I can post here with concerns and get prayers going.

Oh wow Cath. That is scarey. It is so hard to keep these guys down who have such a strong work ethic and are so self sufficient. It's a particular problem if they have been real healthy all their life. My dad talked a mile a minute all through the ambulance, emergency room experience, and even for two days after they first wired his jaw shut. I think that is why he isn't doing well now. He used up all the stored energy trying to be "Mr. Entertainment". So do what you have to do to make your FIL do what the doctors tell him, even if you have to get forceful or mean.  I'm glad to hear he seems to be doing better.

Just wanted to let you 'prayers' know that we did it!!!! Or rather HE did it. Our prayers were heard and answered. My FIL mailed me (he's not good on phone calls) last night and said he tried to drive to the grocery store but his leg hurt so bad as soon as he pulled out of the driveway he couldn't do it. Then later his foot got so swollen he couldn't get his shoe on again. Duh!!!! There's a reason the dr. said 'no driving until I give you a release'. So I will be taking him to his dr. appt. this Wed. and he has promised not to try driving again until he's told he can.
Thanks everyone!!!! Prayer is such an amazing thing!!!!

Cath, I'm sending you big ++ thoughts!  I hope he is able to hang back and take it slowly.

My dad had the exact same aneurysm 5 yrs ago.  He had identical surgery to what you are describing and huge long incisions.  His surgeon, a very excellent one, was so confident that the surgery would be successful as my dad was pretty healthy.  I'm sorry to say that despite everything the surgery failed.  Dad is a longtime smoker and it affected the veins enough that the graft would not take.  It took 4 months of struggle but the end result was an above-the-knee amputation.

Please don't think I say this to frighten you.  Not at all.  Maybe pass this on to your FIL.  If my dad had been able to do as the Dr asked and laid off the smokes, it may have supported the site enough for the graft to take.  But instead, he only made it as far as the hospital parking lot before blazing up. &-)
