I got my first client - and it's a container pond!

 Today I got my first client for my new plant business. It's a very small job, not much money, but hey, it's a start. A lady I know asked if I happen to have any water plants.    Do I ever! I have bunches that can be divided, and some still sitting around waiting for space in my ponds. So Saturday morning, I go over and put together her container pond!

I've been working feverishly for the last six weeks on licensing, marketing, advertising plans, reading LOTS of small business books. The ground work is just about done. It's been a labor of love.

I think you are lucky to have your first job be one that will be simple. You already have your materials and it'll be easy to do. Great advertising too is word of mouth. Maybe do a little extra or stop back in the next few weeks for free to let her know you are concerned that everything is OK. She'll be so impressed she'll tell everybody. What if part of your service was periodic care or opening and closing the ponds? Or is it plants exclusively? Gotta look at your site I guess. What about a sign you could put in the yard while you are working on your jobs, letting the neighborhood know who you are and what you're doing there. Our roofers did that. And I saw a well driller the other day with a huge truck with lettering on the doors but they still had put up a sign in the yard with advertising.

It turned out great! Photos to follow tonight. She had a lovely container she'd found on clearance, 28" wide and 12" deep. I think it was one I had lusted after but wasn't willing to pay full price for. She also had a small pump with a bell fountainhead.

We chose a 3' umbrella palm, a large corkscrew rush, a variegated water celery, and 2 water hyacinths. Photos to follow, maybe tonight.

Thanks for all the pep talks and good ideas! I actually hadn't planned on doing ponds at all, but I do offer exterior container gardens. Since she asked if I had any pond plants, and I had a bunch of extra pond plants sitting around, I figured I could do it for her. I think I'll add it to my list of services on my web site. I don't want to get into major pond installation or maintenance, though, not my cup of tea, and there are several companies around here that do that already.

Yard signs are a good idea, but generally I wouldn't be there long enough or do a big enough job to make it worth my while. I am getting a pair of magnetic car signs made up - I found a local sign shop and I really like the guy there, so he's designing and making them for me. Here's the proof so far - still open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Sheila, my roofing guys left the sign up for about a week, several days after the roof was done and then one day, it dissappeared. It's cheap advertising. Of course you'd have to remember to go back and get it and make sure they don't mind it being in the yard. I was glad to assist them in their advertising seeing I was pleased with their work and how they treated me.
