lily fertilizer questions
« on: August 11, 2007, 09:30:30 AM »
I read that some of you use osmocote or Jobe's tomato stakes for your water lilies.  I have been to three different home and garden stores and none of them had the aquatic plants fertilizer tablets, so I am looking for an alternative.  My questions....

What is the N:P:K ratio I need for my hardies?

Do you use osmocote monthly?

Are there any other slow release products that are appropriate for water gardens?

One more...my $2 PetSmart lilies have about five pads at the water's surface now...is it ok to fertilize them?

Rithie,

I divide and repot my liles in March, just as new growth begins, and fertilize them with Osmocote or preferably, multicote 8 total fertilizer.  I give each plant two tablespoons in the bottom of the no-holes container, add clay first, then the lily, more clay, then large crushed stone.  The plants need no additional fertilizer until repotting the next year.

Multicote total includes micronutrients.

ALSO,  avoid buying osmocote or multicote in those pint jar sized containers at Home Depot, etc. as they are WAY too expensive for what you get.  Buy your time/temperature release fertilizer in bulk 30-55 lb bags.  Even if you have to pay shipping, the cost per pound will be way cheaper than buying the small quantities.

If you want to use commercial water lily tabs, you can order them at  http://www.waterplants.com/cgi-bin/db.cgi?FERTILIZER+TABS&&sf1=Category

Ruthie - if you don't get more answers, will you repost this question?  I have EXACTLY the same qu., as I potted up my PetSmart lilies, and I DID put in a Jobe's spike.  Hope I didn't burn it.

I also am curious as to the numbers we're supposed to use, as what is on the Jobe's's package isn't what I remembered reading on here in some previous post.

I have used the tomato spikes for 3 years now and I love them.  My lillies are just covered.  I put 3 jobes tomatoe stakes  in the dollar store dish pan with mine and I do it monthly.  This year when I devided, really late but almost a month ago,  I thought I would try the oscomite.  I put about two tablespoons in the bottom of the dishpan,  I dont know if I am not being fair enuff since I have just devided the lillies but so far I am not as near impressed with the oscomite but sure do love not having to do it monthly but my blooms are cut in half at least, maybe more, but again that could be due to later season deviding.    I dont know much about the ratio except they love the higher middle number which the tomatoe stakes have.  Hope this helps

Ruthie,
Yep, add fertilizer!

Potting media and fertilizer is something that you will have to experiment on and see what works best for you.  What works for some people doesn't always work well with others.

I use Colorburst  15-30-15 temperature released fertilzer for my plants which I get at Lowes.
NPK-
Phosphorus is the second number in the ratio on the bag and is what you want for blooms.

I pot in dishpans and always dump, but I'd say I use approx. 1/3 -1/2 c. in the bottom of a dishpan.  I use just enough to almost cover the bottom with a thin layer. (I guess I should measure sometime)
Maybe I use way too much but never have a problem with them burning, etc..

I doubt that 2 T is enough Tink, maybe next year experiment and try adding at least twice that amount to see if that makes a difference.

In the beginning of the ponding season, for the first month I add Tomato Spikes along with the Colorburst because temp. released fertilizers are no good if the water isn't warm enough.

Good luck,
Bonnie

Thanks so much...this is the information I needed.  I will be making a trip to Lowe's tomorrow.  Hopefully they will have something suitable!

I also use the Jobes spikes. They are 8-24-8 ratio. I tried the Osmocote this spring when I repotted several lilies and I'm not impressed. I ended up having to give them spikes anyway. Once I gave them the tomato spikes they took off growing. The spikes may not be the most convenient method but its certainly the one I prefer. My lilies seem to prefer them too. :) The spikes can be difficult to find. Ace and True Value Hardware stores are the only place that carries them here.

I also use the Jobe's tomato spikes, and am impressed with the results.  I have used these for a couple of years now- previously used the overpriced tablets specifically for waterlilies from catalogs.  I could not find the Jobe's spikes locally at all this year, and ended up just ordering them from Amazon.com and having them shipped.  They weren't too expensive and shipping wasn't too bad, but then I don't have a huge number of lilies to fertilize.  I have been told that you can buy the actual waterlily tabs in bulk and save $$$ if you have enough lilies to constitute a large order.

No luck finding Jobe's today.  I did find some Miracle Gro spikes with 6:12:6.  I am going to try these...my aquatic poppies are fixing to bloom, but looking kind of anemic.

I'll keep looking...or order some online.

Thanks.

Our Lowes had/have Pennington brand Tomato Spikes.  I didn't buy any this year because I had extra left over from last year.

I'll need to try to find them on sale this year for spring start up next year.

Darn, I wonder if the manufacturer quit making them or that Lowes just don't carry them anymore?

If my local Lowes has extras, I'll stock up!

I also use the tomato spikes.  I seem to have lots of blooms with them too.  Easy to use, with good results.  Just remember you always want the highest number in the middle you can get, that's what promotes the blooms.
