Earthquake (Who all felt it)
« on: April 18, 2008, 03:01:54 AM »
Got woke up to the house shaking.  There was a rumble in the house, my fish tank in my bed room water was sloshing everywhere.  My cats and dogs in the house were freaking out.  WOW, what a feeling and a rude awakening.

There talking about it on the news, something about it being centered in West Salem, IL it was a 5.4.  saying people are feeling it from MO to NY.  WOW, I'm still shaking.  My boys came in my room saying what's going on.  Can you tell I'm a little freaked right now.

Kim

(They've changed it to a 5.2 now)

Yep, we felt it too!

It woke me up and at first I thought maybe our cat was under the bed, then everything started rattling.  We have a suncatcher hanging in the window and it hit the window for what seemed like forever.  Definitely the strongest one I have ever felt!  Creepy feeling for sure.

I bet you California people are having a good laugh at us.

Yes, it is a weird/freaky feeling.

I was asleep and it woke me up.

There was a rumbling sound and shaking, like you I thought one of the cats was in the room then I looked and my 55 gallon fish tank in my room the water was sloshing every where.   I hollared for dh but he had already left for work, my son walked in the room and said what's going on.  I said I think were having an earth quake.  The dogs in the house were barking (even before it started the boys said), he said one of the cats was just looking at the ceiling.  Isn't it weird how animals can tell something is going to happen.

See I'm less than 20 miles away from Ft. Knox Army Base.  We get alot of booms and shaking from them (we call it playing army) as well as the railroad tracks that we are so close too.  With the way places get blown up in the world like the trade center, it does cross your mind to something like that.  I immediately turned on the news, but they hadn't even started talking about it yet.  I was looking up their number to call and see what had happened and they started talking about it on the news.

I called dh and he said he was sitting at a traffic light, he thought it was his car.  If his car is running like that, he better be getting rid of it...LOL

Here's the best story I've heard so far about it....

I spoke to my neighbor (the one that's normally drunk), he said he was sitting on his toilet and started feeling the shaking.  His toy poodles were barking in the kitchen, and he said  he hurried up and went in there to see what was wrong.  He thought his water heater had blew up.  I have laughed and laughed about him telling me that.

Yes, woke up to the bed shaking and the wardrobe door rattling.  I thought "hmmm, earthquake" and went back to sleep!  Was creepy but I wasn't concerned I guess  lol  There was one about the same size in 1968--I was standing in my mother's kitchen and the frig started waddling across the floor.  A neighbor lady was walking down the sidewalk to visit us and remember watching her stop and look around because the ground was shaking.  Well, that's the extent of my earthquake experiences here in the Midwest, like to keep it that way too.

Not laughing at all!
Kim, the late Walter Matthau told a story about a quake experience on the Johnny Carson show.
He was sitting on the can too and trying his hardest. he had taken a laxative.
You can Imagine how funny it was

I think we just had an after shock.  I was sitting here at the computer and every started shaking again, and my dog was barking.  It shook much like this morning, just didn't last as long.

Called my parents and they felt it too.

Scary isn't it?  Glad you are okay.  When you are driving during an earthquake it's reallly weird and you first think you have a flat tire because of the way the car is moving around.

Just gave me a weird feeling.

I turned the tv on the local channel, and its showing after shocks.  Said there has been 5 of them.  The lastest one is the one I felt, 4.5.  The others were only 2.2 and 2.4's.

I felt the most recent aftershock too Kim.  Hubby was standing out in the yard and he didn't feel it.

Our son is in his third year teaching Earth Science and he is having a blast today.  He switched from teaching weather to earthquakes.  He e-mailed me a little while ago about the aftershock, but it happened during his prep period so he didn't have any students with him.  Kinda cool that it happened during Earth Week (maybe the earth is trying to tell us something) and also his birthday is April 22, Earth Day.

Sure has made for an interesting day here!

I believe that, Earth or the man up above is trying to tell us.

That's pretty cool with your son and his birthday being on that day too.

You know they talk about all the flooding.  Look at how everything built up, all concrete and asphalt.  Where do they think the water is going to go?  When there was land, it went in the land, now it hasn't really got anywhere to go.

One other thing, Tribulations!  We're living in it.

Hey get in line!  I'm still waiting to become beach front property.  Just have to wait for the coastline to break off.  ;D

Are you getting aftershocks?  Glad you're all good.

Yup, felt it here too.  Like everyone else I thought it was my cat at first.  I was getting ready to tell her to stop (don't like her waking me up) but she wasn't on my bed.  It had scared her.  I really didn't pay much attention.  At 4:30 I'm not exactly awake yet.  I just rolled over and went back to sleep.  Didn't really concern me too much.  It wasn't till I turned the TV on at 6 that I found out that it was a earthquake.  We didn't feel the first several tremors that followed.  We did however feel the one at about 10:15 or so.  It is kind of a weird feeling.

We had no major damage here.  I work at hospital in central IL and it damaged one of the new construction walls.  Other than that I haven't heard of any real damage in our area.

For all of us in the Midwest a earthquake is a big deal.  It is not everyday we have one.  I can remember only about 3 or 4 in the last 28-29 years that we were able to feel.

I sleep like a rock and didn't feel a thing. My hubby was all excited about it when he woke me up around 5:30.
But even he slept right through.

OK so if I've got this straight, we've got the earthquakes and the Mountain Lions, all we need are the wildfires and the mudslides and we will be....California !!  @O@
