What have Koi got against string algae? Or goldfish for that matter. Why won't they eat it?

I certainly have enough to go around. They wait 'til I scub it off a rock then chow down on the hair algae that's left.

I dont' have either in the pond (knock on wood) - guess the fish and the snails take care of it.

I love to make homemade cuisine but the kids, when they were young, would rather have frozen corn dogs.    Go figure!

Koi will eat string algae. But its like eating rice cakes. Not too much flavor. They only do it when they are really hungry or really bored.

And, at certain times of the year - the algae grows faster than they can eat.

They are not efficient at eating diatomaceous algae (the stuff that is one to three cells and floats in the water column). Some of the algae mats are not really string algae - at least not yet, but accumulations of the diatomaceous algae. Its hard for them to get a good bite - like trying to eat bubbles.

And, their lips aren't really shaped right. If you want an algae scrubber - get a plecostomus.
