Never considered that. I have bought them before and just dump them in when I get home and they don't have legs. I don't think they lived to mature though because I never saw them again.

I was told by a Koi breeder that tadpoles don't taste good to fish, so the fish leave them alone.  But, you know how koi are - When they get into their feeding frenzy, I doubt they even know what goes into their mouths. 

I find tadpoles pretty fragile.  I would worry about change of temperature, water chemical make-up, handling them, etc. 

What's the reason for moving them?  Why not leave them where they are?  I have two or three tubs full of tadpoles, and that's where they stay until they metamorpasize.  Kind of a hassle, stepping around all the water garden tubs in the yard, but the plants in them are pretty.

If you want to keep them, you should keep them in an aquarium.

Chances are when you release them into the pond, the fish or turtles will eat them or when they morph they will leave. In my experience the frogs that hang around my ponds are the ones that just showed up. All tadpoles that I released into the fish pond were eaten or otherwise disappeared. Ditto Western Roughskin newt released into the pond.

When I built ponds with no fish, treefrogs showed up within a few months. Now that there have been five years of them breeding in the yard, there are still none in the fish pond.

In the past tree frogs did leave.  Maybe they will stay, it's a good home.

I have bull frogs everywhere,. And they are great big tadpoles. They take at least one year from spring to spring to turn into frogs. And I have toad tadpoles which turn into a toad the same year. I have tree frog tadpoles which tunto into frogs in one summer.  Mine just showed up. My motto is " If you build them, they will come."  Jerry do you have Horned Toads? I had one as a kid and it is a lizzard.

They tend to be in the desert.  Our low rainfall makes us a desert.  Our water is from the Sierras and the Colorado River

I know you are in the desert, my point was that if you release them into your pond they will likely leave just like the previous ones did and just like the turtles do. I know that you desperately want pet frogs in your pond but I'm afraid you are fighting a losing battle. I wasn't trying to be mean, just trying to say that if you want to keep them, you should probably not release them into the pond.

Reptiles and amphibians aren't smart enough to stay put when they got it good. They go off in search of their own territories or mates or whatever. Here today, gone tomorrow and if there isn't suitable territory nearby; here today, dead tomorrow.....

Jerry, I leave them in the Rubbermaid tubs (they're large tubs, with water lilies, and some are just maybe 5 or 10 gallons) until they turn into toads.  They do just fine.

I do, also, have some in my pond, because the toads mated in there and that's where the eggs hatched.  I know that many of the tadpoles do turn into toads, but I am guessing that the fish also eat many / most of them.  That's why I leave the other ones in the tubs. 

Are you thinking you HAVE to move them to the pond?  Why?  Couldn't they do alright in their current home?  I just worry that the fish will eat them.

I fear you are right LeeAnne.  Lawana has frogs all the time, but they are local and come and go.
Julles, I don't care for the small tubs at all and a big one might need the same equipment a pond does, pumps filters etc.
